“This image is based on a statue in Kiev that commemorates the Holodomor – Stalin’s famine, in which millions of Ukrainians died. That statue of a thin girl is called ‘The bitter memory of childhood’. This imagined statue commemorates Putin’s war, in which so many have become refugees. The young woman takes few things with her, but they include a doll version of that original statue – her heritage. The official passport ‘stamp’ is of Ukraine’s national flower.”
